About: The goal of this map was to create a reference basemap that could be used in a promotional poster/map for a fictitious bike tour. The basemap needed to include terrain, land cover, and place name labels to give fans a sense of the landscape and scenery along the Tour. The route needed to cover 21 day-long stages, with each stage being 75-110 miles in length.
Process: I wrote a python script to mosaic and process DEMs into hillshade rasters and another to generalize the classification of the landcover dataset. After exporting raster data from ArcMap, I used Adobe Photoshop to complete the basemap. To create the cross-section graphic at the bottom, I created a point every 5 miles along the bike route and extracted the elvation data from the DEM at each of those points. I used Adobe Illustrator to finalize all linework, labels, and graphics on the poster.
